Cosmetic procedures tax (Botax)

A recent proposal for the health care reform was to introduce  a  5% tax on elective cosmetic procedures.  Lawmakers that proposed this tax believe that it will allow to generate 5.8 billion dollars over the next ten years.  However,  the plastic surgery societies oppose this tax as discriminatory, arbitrary and ineffective.

First,  this tax is discriminatory against women as 86 percent of plastic surgery patients are female, of which 91 percent are between the working ages of 19-64 according to the current ASPS President. He further added that cosmetic surgery is no longer an exclusive luxury afforded by the very wealthy, but rather a mainstream and reasonable option most common amongst the working middle-class.

According to the  plastic surgery societies, such a tax has been proven ineffective in the past.  New Jersey is the  only state that passed a similar 6% tax on elective medical procedures in 2004. However, the NJ Department of Taxation has experienced a 59% shortfall compared to the projected revenue estimates.  Eight other states have considered similar tax legislation– and they all wisely rejected them.

Finally, though the bill claims that the only procedures that would be taxed are those that are “not necessary to ameliorate a deformity arising from, or directly related to, a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease,” The Plastic Surgery Societies contend that such distinctions aren’t always obvious. Because the line between ‘cosmetic’ and ‘reconstructive’ surgery is not always clear, such a tax would leave the determination of medical necessity up to state tax auditors – a completely inappropriate proposition.

Review of commonly performed procedures in LA

leave a comment »

Plastic surgical procedures are performed in large volumes on a daily basis in Los Angeles.   There are many different procedures performed.  Some of the most commonly performed procedures are:

Breast Augmentation Los Angeles – is probably the most commonly performed procedure by many Los Angeles plastic surgeons.  Silicone breast implants have become very popular and provide a more natural feel than saline implants.  The satisfaction rate of women with silicone implants appears to be higher than among those who underwent augmentation using saline implants.

Rhinoplasty -  is a procedure which reshapes the nose.  Closed and open nose reshaping techniques exist.   Rhinoplasty Los Angeles and  Rhinoplasty Beverly Hills experts will agree that this is one of the most challenging plastic surgical procedures as each person has a different nose.

Tummy tuck  Los Angeles- is  a very commonly performed procedure.  Many mothers and patients who lost weight turn to plastic surgeon to remove excess skin, excess fat, and tighten loose abdominal muscles. This procedure is frequently combined with liposuction.

Rhinoplasty is one of the oldest plastic surgical procedures dating back to ancient India. Over the years, the techniques of rhinoplasty have improved.  The latest rhinoplasty procedures allow to produce a natural appearing noses and achieve a balance between the nose and the rest of the face.  Today rhinoplasty in Los Angeles is performed for people of different age groups. Nose reshaping is performed using an endonasal rhinoplasty technique (also known as closed rhinoplasty) or open rhinoplasty . In closed (endonasal rhinoplasty),  incisions are placed inside the nose. Therefore, no scars will be present across the bottom portion of the nose. For each patient the rhinoplasty procedure needs to be individualized as every person has a different nose.  Breathing problems are improved at the same time in those patients who complain of nasal airway obstruction.

A number of patients combine rhinoplasty with other plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, or lip augmentation.
